Tenugui 4
It was summer.
I wanted to make something in a cooler pattern Tenugui.
White cotton with indigo, this Tenugui is always a Japanese favorite.
We chose a pattern which is one of the Japanese family symbols,
a Plover bird in a circle.
This bird symbol has been used for lots of things such as
Kimono patterns, decor for porcelain dishes, and even business names.
One of my favorite cake companies in Kyushu Japan
is called "Chidori ya" (House of Plover)
The Portuguese brought their cake (Castella) to Nagasaki (Kyushu)
in 1573 (Azuchi-Momoyama Era). Later, in the Tokugawa Era,
Shogetsudo (head quarter of Chidoriya) was established
in 1630. They are still in business with 377 years of history.
I was eating their trade mark cake called "Chidori-Manju"
(sweet white beans paste cake with Plover iron stamped on top)
since I was child. so this Plover icon is very familiar to me!

Lonely sound of Chidori passing by,
How many times the guard of Suma was awaken,
And thought for their loved one...
